Press Release – Moon Village Principles – Mission Prize 2019

Vienna, Austria – November 19, 2019

The Moon Village Association (MVA) announces the winners of the Moon Village Principles – Mission Prize 2019.

In December 2018, the Moon Village Association (MVA) had published a new concept named the “Moon Village Principles”. The Moon Village Principles represent a clear statement of the MV Association’s vision of how missions and other activities focused on the Moon, might most effectively contribute to realization of the Moon Village concept. This includes key areas such as acquiring knowledge of the Moon, establishing standards, proving important technologies, engaging the public and others.

The purpose of the Moon Village Principles is to make a significant contribution to cooperation in the Moon Village without the necessity of formal agreements and regulatory instruments, but by encouraging missions and activities that represent the consensus point of view of the MVA without being strictly binding. The Principles are de facto defining the boundary of the Moon Village implementation.

Now, for the first time, the MVA has undertaken what will be an ongoing effort to recognize and honour, on an annual basis, excellent global contributions to the implementation of the Moon Village Principles in the form of the Mission Prize. The Mission Prize is awarded to flight hardware projects that have succeeded in following the Moon Villages Principles, to a large extent, in the previous or current year.

The MVA is pleased to announce the winners of the Moon Village Principles – Mission Prize 2019:

• Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO), by NASA, USA
• Chang’e-4, by CNSA, China  
• Chandrayaan-2 by ISRO, India

Giuseppe Reibaldi, President of the Moon Village Association, states “The Moon Exploration and Utilization must be carried out for all humankind, considering the benefits that this will bring. The Moon Village Principles enshrine this concept and the MVP Mission Prize 2019 recognizes the missions carried out with this spirit. It is a great honour for the Moon Village Association to award, for the first time, this prize to some of the major Space Agencies of the world. This demonstrates, in a tangible way, that the Moon Village implementation has started and will foster further cooperation between space developed countries and encourage developing countries to join in”.

The Moon Village Principles – Mission Prize 2019 will be awarded to the relevant Space Agency’s representative during the 3^rd International Moon Village Workshop & Symposium in Tokyo, on December 5.

About the Moon Village Association 

The Moon Village Association (MVA) was created in 2017 as a non-governmental organisation (NGO) based in Vienna. Its goal is the creation of a permanent global informal forum for stakeholders like governments, industry, academia and the general public interested in the development of the Moon Village. The MVA is the assembling of all efforts from private, governmental and other entities aimed to explore and use the Moon in a sustainable manner. The MVA fosters cooperation for existing or planned moon exploration programs, derived from public or private initiatives. It comprises approximately 250 individual and 23 institutional members from more than 40 countries, representing a diverse array of technical, scientific, cultural and interdisciplinary fields. MVA also partners with non-space organisations to promote international discussions and formulate plans to foster the development of the Moon Village and create international, national and regional networks to engage civil society around the world.
